Hello,

I am researching my paternal line and my 3xGreat Grandfather, William Barnes, was born, about 1788 in Alfreton.

I have been to the Derbyshire County Records Office in Matlock, but could not find a Baptism for him. So at present I am unable to find out his parents.

In 1799 I believe he married Dorothy Higton of Wirksworth. I have traced 3 sons all born in Alfreton; Charles b.1803, John b.1806, and James b.1813. Dorothy died in 1816, probably as a result of childbirth, and I found her burial record in Alfreton. William remarried in the same year, under Licence, to Mary Hill, a Widow, at St. Martin's P.C.

Between 1816 and 1821 William and Mary moved from Alfreton to the Newton Heath area of Manchester, where another son, George, was born. William and all his sons worked in the Leather industry, variously described as leather lace cutters, tawer, hide & sizing dealer, picker maker and leather dresser/merchant.

If any one can provide sources for finding William's parents, information re his family and those of his siblings (if any) please contact me at;

Thanks,

Rob Barnes.

The Stocks family PDF Print E-mail

Hello everyone,

I am building up a family tree and on my Mother's side, apart from a continuing link with Clay Cross of which I have always been aware, I have found a strong link through my Great Grandmother, Alice Smith (nee Stocks) with South Normanton in particular, but also with Blackwell and Tibshelf, going back to before 1800.

Any information that anyone can provide me regarding the Stocks family would be very welcome and much appreciated. The male members of the Stocks family I have found in the course of my research have all worked in coal mining and I was wondering if there are any archives I could access which would provide further information regarding their working lives.

As I have said, any help in obtaining further information would be greatly appreciated.

THE WHITE FAMILY PDF Print E-mail
Written by Robert White

Hi my name is Robert James White, and with the help of my wife we have been tracing my family history. Most of the White's seem to have came from Alfreton, although we also have connections in Ossington,Gringley on the Hill, Somercoates, North Wingfield, Shirlands, Belper, Stonebroom and Tibshelf. These are all place connected to family members that we have found while doing the family history search. We have used the Census's as well as Parish records and have obtained birth, death and marriage certificates and some parish records. We know that there were many brother and sisters and brothers we have managed to find them all, and most of the male decendants were in mining, they all came from this area and most of them died in this area.

BUT, now we have come to a blank and hope that someone out there can help to fill in the blanks. The person we are looking for is a JOHN WHITE who married MARY ANCLIFF on 8th MAY 1815 in OSSINGTON, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. We know MARY ANCLIFF was born in OSSINGTON and was christened 7th FEBRUARY 1796 in GRINGLEY on the HILL, OSSINGTON, her parents were WILLIAM and ELIZABETH ANCLIFF.

This JOHN WHITE is the person missing from our tree, we cant find his birthplace, his date of birth or the place he died, or his parentage...We would be so grateful if someone could fill in the blanks for us. Whether it be parish records or family connections or anything would be appreciated.

This JOHN WHITE had a son called SAMUEL WHITE who was born in OSSINGTON in 1817 he married PAMELA BALL in 1839. They were married in ST MARTINS CHURCH, ALFRETON, and both resided in SOMERCOATES at the time of their marriage.

SAMUEL WHITE had a son called JOHN WHITE who was born in 1845 in ALFRETON he married MARY FLINDERS in 1866. They were married in the PARISH CHURCH in BASFORD and both resided in BASFORD at the time of their marriage.

JOHN WHITE had a son called THOMAS JAMES WHITE was born in Hepthorne Lane, North Wingfield, 1882 he married MYRA PAYTON in 1905. . This is my grandfather and my grandmother.

JOHN WHITE probably born in 1790s. Where was he born? When was he born? Where did he die? Where is he buried? And any information on his parentage?

Railway Workers and Tunnel Huts PDF Print E-mail
Written by BranchLine

Hi

I have recently joined the Alfreton History site in the hope that I will be able to discover more information about my family who, in the 1901 Census, were living in Tunnel Huts, Alfreton. I know that my relative, Harry Pettit, and all his sons worked together and with their families travelled throughout England and Wales as labourers working on the railways.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who could give me information about:

  • the location of Tunnel Huts
  • life in the Tunnel Huts camp
  • the building of the railway in Alfreton - did it begin around 1900 or were major improvements being made at that time, hence the huge number of workers living in Tunnel Huts in 1901
  • the contractors involved (I believe my relatives worked for a company called Bailey)

Any help you could give to fill in the huge blanks in my records would be very gratefully received. I can be contacted at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Thank you
