Hi

I have recently joined the Alfreton History site in the hope that I will be able to discover more information about my family who, in the 1901 Census, were living in Tunnel Huts, Alfreton. I know that my relative, Harry Pettit, and all his sons worked together and with their families travelled throughout England and Wales as labourers working on the railways.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who could give me information about:

  • the location of Tunnel Huts
  • life in the Tunnel Huts camp
  • the building of the railway in Alfreton - did it begin around 1900 or were major improvements being made at that time, hence the huge number of workers living in Tunnel Huts in 1901
  • the contractors involved (I believe my relatives worked for a company called Bailey)

Any help you could give to fill in the huge blanks in my records would be very gratefully received. I can be contacted at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Thank you
